WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN THE TROOP
Gorillas, who eat mostly plants, exemplify what it means to command respect. They are confident, powerful, impressive animals that live and travel in groups called troops. Older gorillas, or silverbacks, lead these troops and protect the others. I decided to call this community a troop so that we may all become the silverbacks leading groups of our own while providing much-needed support to each other. We need to inspire the people around us and be the example for others to follow. We must reveal to the world what it means to command respect while respecting all livings beings.
Unfortunately, we often stand alone as vegans out in the wild, and I know how discouraging and lonely this can be. When you believe in the vegan lifestyle, you will become passionate and need somebody to share it with, otherwise it might not stick. There are plenty of vegans out there doing amazing things, and I hope to inspire a community where we share ideas, stories, and motivation.
The importance of a group of strong like-minded, compassionate people cannot be understated. There are fewer than 5 million vegans/vegetarians (2%) , and 24 million (10%) former vegan/vegetarians in the United States according to a 2014 study by Faunalytics (formerly the Humane Research Council). Faunalyitcs also conducted some amazing research on why former vegans gave up on the lifestyle. What I find amazing is that 63% said they disliked that their diet made them stick out in a crowd, 49% said they had insufficient interaction with other vegans and most important 84% said they were not actively involved in vegan groups or organizations like potlucks, online communities, etc. This motivates me tremendously because all of these potential problems could be alleviated by being part of a troop.
